Detox Turmeric-Ginger Tea

Anti-Inflammatory. Antibacterial. Anti-Aging. Antioxidant. Consume in Moderation.

I apologize in advance but this is going to be long: It's worth it I promise - keep reading!

For those of you who know me, you've seen me post about #ginger and #turmeric tea dozens of times. Time to get your nails stained a little! Kidding, wear gloves when handling turmeric please!

Curcumin, the compound imparting the vibrant orange-yellow color to turmeric, can take most credit for this. It offers antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-fungal, and antibacterial effects.

However #Cucurmin cannot be used properly by our bodies as it has poor bio-availability. Why? Because it rapidly metabolizes in the liver and intestinal walls, and only a tiny portion of it enters the bloodstream. This is where black pepper comes in!

Black pepper, derived from black peppercorns, has its own set of health benefits to offer. These include enhancing digestion, regulating nerve signals, boosting metabolism, and controlling obesity and has been found to consist of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties just like turmeric. The chemical #Piperine is the major bio-active component present in black and white pepper and that is what makes it a healthy spice.

The effect of Piperine from black pepper was examined on the bio-availability of turmeric’s Curcumin and it was concluded that Piperine enhances the serum concentration, extent of absorption, and bio-availability of Curcumin!

See? Turmeric isn't just for Indian Cuisine! Although I do enjoy it in that as well.

So What Do You Need?

For best results I strongly recommended buying fresh ginger and turmeric from your local market. I usually chop up my ingredients but you can grate them as well!

NOTE:

Turmeric stains! From nails to counter-tops to cutting boards to graters. Immediately clean with soap and water and a bit of Cif to remove stains. And prepare to dedicate a tea-cup, cutting board and grater to it. If you do own a glass mug, this is best as it won't stain.

For 2 cups of tea:

  1. 1/4 cup of Turmeric chopped

  2. 1/4 cup of Ginger chopped

  3. 1 tsp of Black Pepper

Gather your ingredients and chop them up as fine as possible. Place the turmeric and ginger into a submersible strainer within a cup or tea pot. Pour hot water over and fill cup.

Leave the strainer in the water for approximately 2 minutes before removing. This helps with extraction. Remove the strainer and add the black pepper and stir well.

Now sit back, detox and enjoy while you keep on scrolling till the end of this post. Got a few more things in store! There are a few red flags about this mixture so please read.

What About The Ginger?

Ginger usually is known to aid in:

  1. Digestion - Ginger can help prevent colon cancer and alleviate constipation.

  2. Nausea - Taking ginger for motion sickness seems to reduce feelings of nausea, but it does not appear to prevent vomiting.

  3. Cold and Flu Relief - During cold weather, drinking ginger tea is good way to keep warm. It is diaphoretic, which means that it promotes sweating, working to warm the body from within.

  4. Pain Reduction - Ginger has also been found to reduce the symptoms of dysmenorrhea, the severe pain that some women experience during a menstrual cycle.

  5. Inflammation - Ginger has been used for centuries to reduce inflammation and treat inflammatory conditions.

  6. Cardiovascular Health - Other possible uses include reducing cholesterol, lowering the risk of blood clotting, and helping to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

Turmeric, Ginger and Black Pepper together have amazing health benefits, but it's got to be consumed in moderation!

Side Effects of Turmeric-Ginger Tea:

"The side effects of turmeric ginger tea largely result from excess consumption and include gastrointestinal problems. Also, they can occur as a result of drug interactions, complications with pregnancy, individual allergies, and excessive consumption of the tea, which is not recommended.

  1. Drug Interactions: If you are taking any medication for treating diabetes or high blood pressure, the glucose-regulating and hypotensive nature of turmeric ginger tea may drop your blood sugar or blood pressure to dangerous levels. Speak with your doctor before adding this tea to your health regimen. Also, this tea has anticoagulant properties, so it may interfere with warfarin or blood-thinning medications.

  2. Medical Conditions: If you have a history of gallbladder issues or kidney stones, this tea could exacerbate the conditions by increasing uric acid levels in the blood.

  3. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to ginger and turmeric do exist, and may result in skin irritation, headache, nausea, dizziness, swelling of the tongue, lips or throat, and other common allergic reactions.

  4. Pregnancy: Most experts argue that the potent medicinal effects can be dangerous to breastfeeding and pregnant women, so this herbal combination should be avoided.

  5. Gastrointestinal Distress: When turmeric ginger tea is consumed in excessive amounts, it can cause stomach upset, bloating, and cramping. 1 cup per day is sufficient to achieve the health benefits of this drink."

So be very careful of how much you consume of any detox mixture you're interested in. While there are so many benefits, be mindful that anything in excess isn't good!
